Perineum Clinic

At some point in life, especially after menopause, one in ten women will experience “organ prolapse”. Some women also suffer from urinary or faecal incontinence. These women are not comfortable talking about these problems that cripple their social life. Some of them think there is no effective treatment.

The multidisciplinary team at the perineum clinic draws on all of its skills in offering a treatment plan appropriate to the specific circumstances of each patient.

Perineum

The perineum is located in the pelvis. The bladder and urethra (at the front), the vagina (in the middle) and the anus and rectum (at the rear) are kept in place by the pelvic floor. Disorders of the perineum occur when the pelvic floor muscles become weakened, for example, following a difficult delivery, hormone deficiency or aging. Strenuous physical exertion or overweight can also aggravate the situation.

Disorders

Perineum-related problems can lead to the following disorders:

  • Involuntary loss of urine (urinary incontinence), a frequent need to urinate and cystitis
  • Difficulty retaining stools or gas (faecal incontinence), constipation
  • Sensation of a ball/mass in the vulva
  • Painful sex and sexual health problems

Treatments

There are several treatments for pelvic floor disorders. Some complaints can be treated with medication. In many instances, a physiotherapist can help by offering advice and recommending exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. In other instances, surgery proves to be the best solution. After medical consultations, the multidisciplinary team at the perineum clinic chooses the treatment method that is most appropriate and most anatomy-friendly for the patient. In most cases, a combination of treatments is recommended.

Multidisciplinary team

At the perineum clinic, the specialists in the various disciplines work together. Each of them collects the contributing data (medical history, clinical examination, medical imaging, etc.) for his speciality, and then from the consultation, the Perineum Clinic recommends a fitting treatment.
