Providing care at a top spot in the city centre, with regulated fees, it covers all oral pathologies

Brussels, 19 June 2023 - Clinic Saint-Jean and its dentistry department have recently taken a giant leap for dentistry in our country by inaugurating the very first craniofacial clinic in Belgium, providing holistic and multidisciplinary care of patients with complex oral and dental problems. A great advocate of digital dentistry, the unit has also acquired new state-of-the-art technology and equipment to enhance the quality of its diagnostics and treatments.

After months of building works, the dentistry department officially opened its new premises last Saturday. This brand-new facility, located at the Méridien site of Clinic Saint-Jean, expands its current offer of dental care and hosts the new craniofacial clinic.

Craniofacial clinic: the multidisciplinary approach par excellence

Ramin Marashi, dentist and doctor of dental sciences and gnathology, will head this new department as of 1 July. The new space will welcome a multitude of patients every day and offer them comprehensive, rapid and multidisciplinary care.

“Let’s consider the case of a patient who has come to see us because they are experiencing jaw pain. We will use a set of state-of-the-art devices and technologies to carry out a full examination of their skull, jaw, jaw movements or even their posture. Although it’s not something we always think about, craniofacial pain can arise from postural asymmetry, or vice versa,” explains M-Ali. Khamaktchian, head of the specialised dentistry department.

These comprehensive examinations enable the specialists to quickly identify the cause of the problem and put forward a specific treatment plan to their patients. For this purpose, dentists and surgeons work directly with maxillofacial physiotherapists and osteopaths, as well as with the orthopaedic, physical medicine, rheumatology, ENT and neurology departments at Clinic Saint-Jean.

Innovation for the benefit of the patient

In order to begin operations at this new clinic, and further improve the general provision of care, Clinic Saint-Jean and its dentistry department have invested in many new technologies: an intraoral scanner, 3D simulation software, navigated dental implant surgery equipment, a dynamic jaw motion tracking system, next-generation 3D X-ray and even a non-radiographic postural analysis device.

The new “connected room” of the Académie Européenne d’Implantologie Orale also brings innovation to the table. This next-generation conference room is fitted with giant screens, HD cameras and all the equipment needed to transmit sound and images in real time anywhere in the world. As such, the specialists who use it can give lessons, share their experience to offer the most appropriate treatments, or even conduct live surgery, accompanied by colleagues from around the world.

Dentistry in Belgium

These possibilities for treatment will certainly be welcomed given the oral health issues Belgium is faced with. Indeed, the InterMutual Agency (IMA) reports that only half of the Belgian population has been to see a dentist at least once in the period from 2018 to 2020, either due to neglect or a lack of means.

Nevertheless, oral health is crucial as it has many repercussions on a patient’s health. This is why Clinic Saint-Jean and its dentistry department have endeavoured to make their services accessible to as many people as possible by applying regulated rates, as well as the prices used by university hospitals for uncoded procedures.

“We provide high-quality care to all our patients here. Since we work with a very broad panel of specialists with a view to providing comprehensive and multidisciplinary care, patients are not sent from one department to another to get a clear answer to their questions: they are given precise information and know their treatment plan at the end of the consultation,” says Alexandre Deschuymere, General Manager of Clinic Saint-Jean.
