Which patients can benefit from surgery ?

1. You have a BMI of over 40, you have already tried numerous diets without success, and you have been overweight for many years.
In this case, the best chance for solving your overweight problem is through surgery.

2. You have a BMI of over 35 and suffer from either of the following:

  • drug-dependent diabetes,
  • sleep apnoea syndrome,
  • hypertension treated with 3 sets of medication.

You can also benefit from surgery.

If you have already undergone an operation to lose weight and it has been ineffective, you can undergo another operation if your BMI is ≥ 35.

3. If your BMI is below 35, you are not a candidate for surgery; an educational and medical approach will be recommended, which includes:

  • Nutritional support;
  • Supportive psychological and behavioural therapy;
  • Individual or group physical exercises, in the gym, guided by a physiotherapist  and following a recommended schedule (2 to 3x/week);
  • The fitting of an intragastric balloon, on the advice of a gastroenterologist, as a therapeutic option.
